This unit works well as an introductory project in an ethnomathematics class. The unit prompts students to think critically about their existing definition of math, and how they use math outside of school. Through an exploration of the 8 math practices and a discussion of cultural values, students may begin to reconsider what qualifies as “math.” Finally, students will share out about their own culture and math traditions by making an artistic collage booklet called a zine that can be easily photocopied and distributed to peers.
