In this lesson, students will be applying what they’ve learned about finding the approximate volume of irregular objects, using the formula to calculate volume, and using background knowledge to assess the relative sizes of different units. Students will be presented with the challenge of finding a potential gift that will fit inside of a gift box. The dimensions of the gift box will be provided by the teacher. Students must measure the approximate Length, Width, and Height of the object, calculate its approximate volume, and explain how they know it will fit inside of the gift box. In addition to practicing the current standard they are working on, the goal of this lesson is for students to consciously find objects that will maximize the space inside of the box. Until now, they have been working with hypothetical situations.
