In this lesson, students will explore how to manipulate sine wave equations in the context of music and additive synthesis. Musicians and sound mixers use mathematical knowledge of how to build up and break down the waveforms of different instruments and use these ideas to both mimic the unique profile of real-world instruments and create sounds that would be difficult to create without digital technology. After exploring how changes to the coefficients and sums of sine equations affects the sound, they will build their own virtual soundboard tied to a topic theme of their choice.
