The purpose of this lesson is to introduce recently arrived immigrants to their new community. Los Angeles is a huge city, and teaching students to navigate and understand their city and local community is essential to their well-being and success in a new country. Using a mathematics lens, students will learn about their new home city as well as be able to share where they come from. Each topic is chosen with the purpose of inviting students to apply mathematics to their everyday lives and see how mathematics shapes many of their day-to-day experiences. Most importantly, the purpose of these lessons is to practice the 21st Century “super skills” identified in the Common Core State Standards, namely communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. I hope that introducing immigrant students to project-based learning early in their mathematical journeys while simultaneously being introduced to a new school, city, and community will have a profound personal and intellectual impact as they navigate identity in a new home.
