For those of you out there missing the classroom, here is a throw back to Spring 2026.
The teacher candidates in Cohort 407 completed STE 325 Elementary Mathematics II by designing, planning, and implementing Math Stations with Grade 2-3 and 4-5 students from the University Laboratory School! Everyone had tons of fun solving problems and engaging in math games. Here are some quotes from teacher candidates about the experience:
Rachel Hamada: "I enjoyed getting to implement the station with many groups of kids, since we could see differentiation and change our teaching to meet the needs of the students."
Morley Birdsell-Farrow: "Having the chance to work with multiple groups of unfamiliar students meant that we had to be adaptive and quick thinking."
The University Laboratory School was an awesome collaborator for this event! A big Mahalo to Alyssa Kapaona, Dawn Fukushima, Lorraine Kojima, and Rayna Kekoa for helping out and making their students available!

Hawaii Writing Project: Niu Valley Middle School Edition ✍️ !
Niu Valley Middle School was one of the hosting schools for the Inaugural Hawaii Writing Project Advanced Institute and Young Writers Camp! The NVMS site served approximately 40 rising 6th grade NVMS students. We were lucky to have Marybeth Baldwin from HTA be the site director and work with 4 terrific teachers to make the Hawaii Writing Project a memorable experience at NVMS. The young writers got into their own heads and really got a chance to create, learn and grow as composition creators.
The Inaugural Hawaii Writing Project Advanced Institute and Young Writers Camp was offered as STE 697, and supported by the College of Ed Dean`s office and STE, and the Harold K.L Castle Foundation.

Noelani Elementary School recently served as a site for the Inaugural Hawaii Writing Project Advanced Institute and Young Writers Camp! The site brought together approximately 90 rising 3rd–5th grade students from Noelani, Hokulani, Manoa, and Lincoln Elementary.
Supported by 11 teachers and 2 camp directors—including our own Dr. Stephanie Buelow and Punahou teacher, Jill Sprott. Over the course of five days, these young writers engaged in multimodal composition, exploring how words and art come together to tell powerful stories.
The initiative was offered as STE 697 and was proudly supported by the College of Education Dean`s office, STE, and the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation.

This summer, the Hawaiʻi Writing Project launched STE 697: Advanced Institute, a brand-new graduate course that paired teacher inquiry with the joy and energy of Young Writers Camp.
Across three sites: Stevenson Middle School, Niu Valley Middle School, and Noelani Elementary, approximately 150 young writers from Stevenson, Niu Valley, Noelani, Mānoa, Lincoln, and Hōkūlani came together to write, create, revise, share, and find their voices.
At the same time, 18 teacher fellows, including educators from Maui and Hilo, engaged in their own inquiry-to-practice work, designing meaningful writing experiences for students while studying what happens when young people are invited into joyful, purposeful writing communities.
From June 8-15, classrooms became safe spaces for storytelling, creativity, connection, and courage — reminding us that writing is not just about producing a piece, but about helping students see themselves as writers.
Mahalo to our young writers and their families, teacher HWP fellows, camp directors, partner schools, and communities for making this inaugural experience so powerful.
