Our programs offer thoughtfully designed, community-driven pathways into teaching that prepare highly effective, confident educators ready to make a meaningful impact in their classrooms and communities.
Program Design Features
STUDENT COHORTS
- Student groups move through their program together
- Dedicated faculty coordinator supporting cohort throughout their program
- More intentional, streamlined program design
- Reserved courses – no worrying about courses filling up or not being available
- Scaffolded learning – cohorts move together through intentionally designed learning experiences that build upon each other
- Higher graduation rates – due to built in support structures and programs designed for cohorted groups
- Collegial support – students build relationships that support each other then become professional networks and long-lasting friendships
FIELD-BASED
- From day one students apply what they’re learning directly within classrooms
- Opportunities to learn in different schools, classrooms, and from different mentor teachers
- Field requirements and expectations build over time into the final semester of student teaching
- On-the-job opportunities may be available to those already employed in local schools (approval required)
EXPERT FACULTY
- Experienced P12 classroom teachers
- Researchers with up-to-date knowledge and teaching strategies
- Members of the broader academic community sharing their work in local, national and international venues
- Funded for innovative projects and experiences benefiting students
ACCESSIBLE STATEWIDE OPTIONS
Two program formats available:
- Campus-Based – In-person program with courses held on O’ahu, often on the UH Mānoa campus
- Distance Statewide – Hybrid (online and in-person) program accessible to those living on any island in Hawai‘i
- Coursework – Online (may be synchronous or asynchronous sessions). Synchronous sessions are held via Zoom, most often in the early evenings.
- Fieldwork – In-Person. Candidates placed in classrooms on the island they reside to complete their field requirements and projects.
- Weekend Gatherings – Some programs provide face-to-face weekend gatherings each semester. Weekend gatherings are typically limited to 1-3 per semester, typically on a Saturday. STE provides travel reimbursement stipend to offset costs.
