Associate Professor Hannah M. Tavares received the 2017 Critic’s Choice Book Award from the American Educational Studies Association (AESA) for her book, Pedagogies of the Image: Photo-archives, Cultural Histories, and Postfoundational Inquiry. The book considers the potential of photographs for orienting in a critical direction the scope, questions, and interests of the disciplinary conventions of the field of educational inquiry. Visual objects may help illuminate broader socio-historical events and logics that are deeply entwined with education yet remain marginal to or “outside” of what constitutes its domain of study. In this book, photographic images are treated as resources for re-visioning the founding disciplinary objects of educational studies by reorienting its proper objects of study, traditional archives, persistent categories, frames of reference, and accepted portals of research and inquiry. Tavares constructs a rather unconventional vantage point to explore the question: “How might an engagement with photo-archives open new horizons in the study of education from a postfoundationalist, multi-theoretic and cross-disciplinary perspective?”

The Critics’ Choice Award serves to recognize and increase awareness of recent scholarship deemed to be exceptional in its field and of potential interest to members of the Association.
About the Author
Dr. Hannah M. Tavares is an associate professor in the College of Education Department of Educational Foundations. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Policy Studies and Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She completed her Masters of Education in Educational Foundations and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a Certificate in Ethnic Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Her most recent publications include an essay in the journal Educational Perspectives: Journal of the College of Education Special Issue: Filipino Americans and Education (2016) and a book chapter in Philosophy: Education Macmillan Interdisciplinary Handbooks: Philosophy series (2017).
