Joel Weaver was born and grew up in Congo-Kinshasa in Central Africa, which is the root of his passion for International Education. During his career in International Education, Joel has taught ESL at all levels, established ESL teacher training programs, and run ESL schools and programs around the world. Currently, he is the Director of the Hawaii English Language Program (HELP) at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa. Mr. Weaver has been instrumental in promoting international education in Hawaii, establishing the Study Hawaii Educational Consortium, a statewide effort of 30+ institutions to promote international education as a cultural and economic good for Hawaii. In addition to being President of Study Hawaii, Joel also serves the Hawaii Pacific Export Council as Education Committee chair. He presents at regional and international conferences on topics related to Comprehensive Internationalization in higher ed, strategic international enrollment management, economic impacts of international education, and student visa policies and practices. His current research in the area of International and Global Education extends his passion to open pathways for disadvantaged students from the developing world to improve their lives and those of their communities through greater access to educational opportunities.
