Erin Centeio

Erin Centeio, Assistant Professor in the UH Mānoa College of Education Department of Kinesiology & Rehabilitation Science (KRS), has been appointed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition Science Board. An assistant professor in Health and Physical Education at KRS, Centeio has been with the COE since 2018.“It’s an absolute honor to be selected onto the PCSFN Science Board as it will allow me to work with top scholars in the fields of sports, fitness, and nutrition,” Centeio said.The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) selected Centeio from a competitive pool of highly qualified applicants to serve on the PCSFN Science Board based on her research and expertise. Created by Congress in 1976 to lead disease prevention and health promotion efforts in the United States, ODPHP is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health.

As part of the Science Board, Centeio will provide scientific guidance in the fields of physical activity, health, sports, and nutrition. The focus of the one-year term will be on HHS’s National Youth Sports Strategy and youth sports-related topics. In addition to providing subject matter expertise, the Science Board will participate in virtual board meetings, present to the Council, and provide content for publications on youth sports topics.

Centeio concluded, “Our work together will shed light on the most salient and evidence-based practices as they relate to youth outcomes. I am excited to work hard to disseminate the information to the people who need it most in order to contribute to a collective impact in our field.”
