FAQs

General

Are GOO stipends taxable?

The Memorandum of Agreement with the Department of Education considers GOO tuition and travel stipends as income and is, therefore, taxable. No tax form is provided by the university. GOO recipients are required to sign and return a memo that will be emailed from STE Secondary to confirm receipt of issued stipend checks.

What do stipends cover?

Stipends will cover tuition and fees (33 credits for the PBCTE-Secondary program and up to 34 credits of the MEdT-Secondary program). Neighbor island students will also receive travel stipends to cover roundtrip flights that are purchased by the GOO recipients to attend mandatory face-to-face meetings.

What happens if I need to repeat a course for any reason (i.e., no pass, withdraw after official drop date, etc.)?

If a student is required to repeat a course for any reason (i.e., no pass, withdraw after official drop date, etc.), the student will receive no additional stipend.

Coursework

Are online courses available for neighbor island students?

Yes. All courses are offered using a synchronous online format.

Can I do my practicum or student teaching at the school of my choice?

There shall be no guarantee for where your teaching practicum/field experience will be located. Our program takes great pride in vetting and securing school partnership relationships that we believe will be the best learning context for you. The only guarantee we can make, is you will be placed on the island you reside on. For example, if you live on Oʻahu, you will be placed on Oʻahu.

How many teaching practicum field hours are required?

During each term you will be expected to engage in field experiences that will total 1,000 hours over 3 terms:

  • Term 1 (Spring): STE 402(N) - This course requires 2 full days a week in the field (in a variety of classroom settings including a Literacy Clinic);
  • Term 2 (Fall): STE 402(Alpha) - This course requires 2 full days a week in the field (in your discipline/content area);
  • Term 3 (Spring): STE 405(Alpha) - This course requires 5 full days a week in the field (in your discipline/content area).

What happens if I do not complete the program?

If for any reason you do not complete the program, your name will be submitted to the Hawai'i State Department of Education and you will need to repay all the money received.
