How to Apply Instructions

UHM Graduate System Application Form

Complete the online Graduate Application Form:

  • To ensure your application is routed to our department, on the Add Programs screen, choose “Teaching-MEdT (Fall)” by clicking the blue + in the add column.
  • Pay application fee $100 (non-refundable)
  • Submit Transcripts from each institution attended (except for UH system transcripts). Unofficial transcripts can be uploaded to Graduate Divisionʻs Supplemental Material Upload Website, but admitted students must submit official transcripts in order to enroll.

International Students and/or Transcripts

  • For applicants who graduated from institutions outside of the U.S- an evaluation of your transcripts from a NACES member is required.
  • If the language of instruction as your institution was not English, submit TOEFL or IELTS Scores

    • Dual License Option (select from 2nd major box)
      • Note: Hawaiian Language Immersion applicants must be fluent speakers of Hawaiian as demonstrated by a B or better in HAW 402 (UHM) or KHAW 404 (UHH).
    • Program Delivery Option:
      • Select Manoa Campus if you intend to complete the program on ʻOahu, attending a portion of your classes in person.
      • Select Statewide if you intend to complete the program on any island Online/Hybrid delivery.

Content Knowledge Requirement:

All applicants must verify they have met the content knowledge requirement for their selected licensure field. Content knowledge can be met by taking and passing the Praxis exam in the licensure field or through previous coursework taken.

Option A: Passing Praxis Exam in Content Area

Applicants may choose to verify their content knowledge by submitting a passing score on the licensure test adopted by the Board in the content field. Submit official scores to University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, institution code 4867.

OR

Option B: Demonstrate Content Knowledge through Prior Coursework

For Elementary Education (Grades K-6)

A minimum of thirty-six semester hours of coursework from an accredited institution of higher education with at least nine (9) semester hours in each of the following four core content areas: language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.  At least three (3) semester hours in each of the core content areas must be upper division (300 or 400 level).

For Secondary Education (Grades 6-12)

The three alternatives for secondary education are:

  • Content major consisting of a minimum of thirty semester hours in the content field for a bachelor’s degree awarded by an accredited institution of higher education; OR
  • A minimum of thirty semester hours in the content field from an accredited institution of higher education, at least fifteen of which must be upper division level; OR
  • A master’s, specialist, or doctoral degree in the license field awarded by an accredited institution of higher education.

For Dual Hawaiian Language Immersion (Grades K-6 or 6-12)

In addition to your content knowledge for elementary or secondary, Hawaiian Language Immersion candidates must be fluent speakers of Hawaiian as demonstrated by a B or better in HAW 402 (UHM) or KHAW 404 (UHH).

 

For Dual Special Education (Grades K-6 or 6-12)

This content field does not need to be completed at the time of application. In addition to your content knowledge for elementary or secondary, candidates pursuing licensure in special education will need to take and pass the Praxis Content Knowledge exam in Special Education while enrolled, prior to their final semester of student teaching.
