How did you become interested in the Educational Psychology BAM Program?
I was introduced to the BAM program by my academic advisor. My interest in psychology stems from my interest in children’s development. Educational psychology is closely related to children’s development and how to foster positive development to enhance their academic, social, and personal development.

Where do you work?
I am currently a graduate assistant with the Thompson School of Social Work and Public Health at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. I work with the C-3 Overdose to Action project that brings awareness about Hawaiʻi’s community and substance abuses.

Do you participate in clubs or organizations in or outside of school?
I am the current president of the Psi Sigma: The Psychology Connection organization at UH. I previously served as the Director of Academic/Professional Events for Psi Sigma and the president of the psychology club at Leeward Community College.

How has the COE program impacted or benefited your career path?
The COE program has given me a wider perspective of educational psychology. Recently, I have been introduced to the evaluation research of educational psychology. I am interested in exploring the strengths and weaknesses of programs implemented in the school system and how we can change programs to benefit students more effectively.

Is there anyone in particular who inspired you to pursue a career in education?
Honestly, I never even thought about pursuing a career in education. No one in my immediate family graduated from college. I would have never even gone into the education field if it wasn’t for my academic advisor suggesting the BAM program to me. When I started my master’s courses in Spring 2022, I did not know what to expect. However, Dr. Ratliffe has left an everlasting impression on me. She inspired me to consider a career in this field. She is dedicated to guiding me to be a great researcher and writer. I wouldn’t have gotten as far as I have without her support and guidance.

What are your future plans with your degree?
I applied to several doctoral programs in clinical psychology. My interest is in the social relationships of children and adolescents. I hope to become a licensed therapist and to teach college students part time. I would like to give the same knowledge, support, and guidance to future students that I received during my years in college.

Anything else you would like to include?
I honestly never even thought about receiving my degree in education or pursuing a career in this field. However, the COE faculty encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and discover different interests within the field. They’ve challenged me and critiqued my coursework while being supportive and encompassed me with their knowledge and wisdom.
