Place-based NGSS curriculum units on climate change
Workshop
Learn to use free online curriculum units targeting DOE NGSS standards. Written by Hawaii teachers and scientist. Each relates to Climate Change and has an engineering design task where students explore solutions. 1) Earth Systems in my Ahupua’a, 5th grade. Features Hawai’i GIS maps, real data, local weather systems, native plants, and Hawai’i images and illustrations. 2) Global Climate Change: Local Impact and Action, Middle School. Features lab work, graphing with local data, evidence-based writing, and school-focused design task. 3) Carbon Cycle off Balance, High School Biology. Each lesson is introduced with an experiment. The unit covers photosynthesis, the carbon cycle, ecosystem instability, and includes an engineering design task based on real local data. 4) Energy Solutions, High School Chemistry. Hawaii’s energy transition and hands-on labs provide the context to illustrate chemical reactions, equilibrium in chemical systems, and chemical engineering.
