STEMS² Symposium Opening Experience

Description

Join us for our in-person opening experience at Waikalua Loko Iʻa (45-231 Kulauli St, Kaneohe, HI) from 9am – 12pm as we explore this year’s symposium theme with Herb Lee and The Pacific American Foundation. Engage in place-based learning with an opportunity to give back to the host organization by helping with a project that helps to sustain their mission. Be in community, and share a meal as we hear stories from STEMS² alumni that connects their work to and builds bridges between indigenous wisdom and 21st century STEM technologies. Participants who RSVPed by June 5th will receive a free lunch from our partners at Waihole Poi Factory.

Event Details

Opening Protocol begins promptly at 9am, plan to arrive 15 minutes early to complete waiver forms in time to  oli kahea together. Our service learning may include options such as laying coral or clearing mangrove (for folks open to getting wet & muddy). Wear comfortable covered shoes, work clothes that can get dirty, bring eating utensils, and prepare for sun with sunblock, hat, & water bottle. Seating may be limited, you are welcome to bring your own folding or beach chair if you want to be certain to have your own seat.

COVID Protocols

Please review the PAF COVID Wellness Check and the STEMS^2 COVID Safety Protocol. Due to the current elevated rates on Oahu we will ask all participants to wear a facemask indoors and outdoors. We recommend a facemask of KN95 quality or higher. Please monitor your own health daily for COVID-19 symptoms. If you are feeling unwell we ask that you refrain from this event and limit your symposium participation to the online experiences.

Join us as Herb Lee and The Pacific American Foundation share their story on how they are putting the 7th generation philosophy to practice.

10:00am Service Learning

Engage in place-based learning with an opportunity to give back to the host organization by helping with a project that helps to sustain their mission. Be in community with the STEMS² network while getting to know and experience Waikalua Loko Iʻa. 

11:00am Storytelling & Lunch

Share a meal together as we hear stories from STEMS² alumni that connects their work to and builds bridges between indigenous wisdom and 21st century STEM technologies.
