Upon successful completion of this degree you will be recommended for initial teacher licensure to the Hawai`i Teachers Standards Board (HTSB) to teach kindergarten through sixth grade (K-6) in a general education classroom. You will also be recommended for licensure in early childhood education (ECE). The ECE emphasis prepares graduates to work with students in preschool through 3rd grade (PK-3) settings.

BEd Dual Preparation Program Career Expectations/Info

  • Teacher candidates are eligible for two licenses
    • Elementary Education (K-6)
    • Early Childhood Education (PK-3)

K-6 and PK-3 teachers (are):

  • typically responsible for the instruction of all core subject areas for a class of approximately 25 students
  • expected to meet the academic, organizational, behavioral, and professional goals of highly qualified teachers in the United States
  • help provide the early academic and social experiences that build a foundation for future success
  • adapt and individualize instruction in ways that are developmentally appropriate for younger children

About this Program

  • Attend a two-year cohorted program
    • Groups of approximately 22 students
    • Cohorts take most of their courses together
  • Applications accepted for Fall semester only
    • Priority Deadline - February 1
    • Final Deadline - March 1
  • Expect to attend as a full-time student
  • Complete all courses prior to student teaching
  • Pass PRAXIS II Content Knowledge prior to student teaching
  • Gain field experience with a mentor teacher
    • One semester of field experience in a pre-school setting
    • Two semesters of field experience in a K-6 setting
    • One semester (final semester) student teaching in a K-3 setting
  • Program coursework is closely linked with field experience and student teaching
  • ECE requires between 18-21 credits of additional coursework
