Constructions of Young Children’s ‘Disabled’ Identities
Presentation
I use a disability studies framework to disrupt dominant discourses of ability, diversity, and difference and problematize paradigms of disability transmitted in early childhood settings. I focus on using my own story as a person who claims the identity of a person with disabilities and the stories that Head Start teachers shared with me about the children with disability labels in their classrooms. Session participants will engage in a critical discussion around the social construct of disability and the implications for early childhood.
