How I Practice STEMS²

My teaching is centered around culture and place-based pedagogy by utilizing multi-disciplinary approaches. Project-based utilizing learning-centered approaches are used to introduce intentional content that can be applied to problem-solving themes. My curriculum utilizes blended ideas in designing haʻawina (lessons) with real-world applications. My pedagogy focuses on native ʻike (knowledge) from the kūpuna (elders) that have given us a foundation of ʻike ʻāina (learning from the land/earth). The sense of place is paramount in setting the context for understanding the environment and culture of the place in the haʻawina. These approaches help the students be vested in their learning and have ownership by advocating for something relative to their lives and ʻohana (family). Thereby helping the students with their identity in society and their home.
