Where do you work?
I am the Nā Kamaliʻi Hoaloha Preschool Director in Kalamaʻula, Molokaʻi.

How did you become interested in the field of early childhood education?
I began working as a teacherʻs aid at Kamehameha preschools in Honolulu back in 2008 and really became interested in all that encompasses the field. Wanting to learn more about how children grow and develop both physically and psychologically, I began my education at the Honolulu Community College and kept going until I received my MA.

Why do you think early childhood education is so important?
Early childhood is the foundation for the rest of our lives and encompasses all aspects of our lives. It is very important for young children to acquire these foundational skills so that they can learn to navigate the world around them.

How has the COE program impacted or benefited your career path?
It has allowed me to grow my understanding and competency in the field, and it has also groomed me in my role as a leader and mentor.

Is there anyone in particular who inspired you to pursue education as a career?
Knowing my past experience watching children, my mother insisted I try this field at a time when I felt lost and did not know which direction my life would take. Turns out, mom’s do know best!

What are your future visions and goals?
Nā Kamaliʻi Hoaloha Preschool has been in operation for over 40 years. My goal is to continue providing families and children on Molokaʻi with the quality child care this institution has provided thus far.

I would like to thank Robyn Chun (my master’s professor, mentor, leader, and overall wonderful person) as well as the whole team of ECE professors who have made my journey throughout this cohort not only possible but enjoyable as well. I can’t express enough how you have all helped me become a more self-assured leader in the field of early childhood education.
