Aloha Kumu is a hui (group) of educators committed to supporting teachers in their pursuit of meaningful and relevant professional development and learning opportunities.
Aloha Kumu faculty will work with groups of teachers to develop inter-disciplinary MEd-CS degree programs specifically designed to help them address the needs, goals, and aspirations of their students, schools, districts, and/or communities. We will collaborate with teachers to articulate program goals and objectives; develop a program schedule; select courses; develop activities and experiences; and design a plan b project. Aloha Kumu faculty have developed cohorted MEd-CS degree programs for K-12 teachers at various private and public schools in Hawaiʻi. We have developed programs that have focused on National Board Certification, community-based education, Native Hawaiian and Indigenous Education, Aloha ʻĀina Leadership, and place-based education. While many of our MEd-CS programs have served teachers at schools in the Nānākuli-Waiʻanae and Campbell-Kapolei complexes within the Hawaii-Department of Education, we look forward to working with and supporting teachers throughout Hawaiʻi.
Aloha Kumu is currently offering a MEd-CS program/cohort focusing on Aloha ʻĀina Education and Leadership for teacher leaders.
All CS programs offer on-campus, evening classes that are currently held from 4:30-7:00p.m. Most CS programs also offer hybrid courses (both online & evening). Aloha Kumu may also offer classes on weekends and during summer sessions. Classes may also be offered at Leeward Community College and at community/school sites.
The Aloha Kumu program is cohorted with almost all classes taken with the same group of students. Aloha Kumu cohorts usually begin in the fall semester of even years (2014, 2016, etc) and run for two years including the summer session. Cohorts average 15-20 students.
