About

The Preschool Development Grant Birth through Five Renewal Grant (“PDG B-5 Renewal Grant”) from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Office of Child Care (OCC) was awarded to University of Hawaiʻi, Hawai‘i P-20 Partnerships for Education (Hawai‘i P-20). This federal grant is focused on strengthening the State’s integrated early childhood care and education (ECCE) system to prepare low-income and disadvantaged children to enter kindergarten, and have a seamless and high-quality early childhood experience from birth through third grade, by investing in the early childhood workforce and expanding access to high-quality ECCE programs and supports provided through a comprehensive mixed delivery system. Through this renewal grant, states have the opportunity to address objectives that the data, research, or needs assessment have indicated are needed within the state to help break down barriers and improve access to higher quality early childhood services. CDS is contracted to provide monitoring and evaluation activities to this grant.

Principal Investigator

Maya Matheis, Ph.D., M.S.W., is a licensed clinical psychologist and researcher at the Center on Disability Studies at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa. She completed her Masters in Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis, her PhD in clinical psychology at Louisiana State University, and her postdoctoral training at the UC Davis MIND Institute, where she completed the Autism Research Training Program (ARTP). Her clinical specialization is in the assessment and treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental disorders.
