Graduate Certificate

FAQs

If I am concurrently enrolled in Masters and Graduate certificate programs, what is the relationship between the two culminating projects (i.e. Plan A or B and Graduate certificate capstone)?

Students may work on their Plan A or B for their Masters at the same time as their capstone project. The two can overlap or be two separate projects. The Plan A or B should include more integration of what they’ve learned from their masters courses and may be a further expansion of their capstone topic in their Plan A or B.

General

Is it possible to pursue a Graduate Certificate and the Master of Education in Curriculum Studies or Second Language Studies?

You may pursue both graduate certificate and MEd-CS and/or MEd-SLS degrees if you fulfill the requirements for both.

Do the courses that I take in the graduate certificate advance me in the HIDOE salary schedule?

Students need to check with their Reclassification Department Officer to find out if any course that they take advances them in their schedule. For teachers already in the DOE system in Hawai‘i, it depends on their field of expertise, their school assignment responsibilities, and principal approval. From the UH side, the course needs to be within a degree granting program, and the course content needs to be related to the teacher’s field of expertise. For more information, see reclassification credits.

Can I work during my study in the graduate program?

Yes. Classes are typically offered during the evening hours of 4:30 – 7pm or are offered online to accommodate working professionals. Some programs offer coursework during the summer when the K-12 school session is on summer break.

Is the MMPP a cohorted program?

The two core courses are cohorted in the MMPP graduate certificate program: SLS 680U and EDCS 696. These courses are taken at the beginning and conclusion of the program, respectively. Cohorting these courses support the development of a professional learning community focused on place-based, culturally sustaining curriculum development, implementation, assessment, and evaluation. The organization of MMPP coursework for the proposed K-12 TESOL Licensure/Add-a-Field is more cohorted with a defined scope and sequence of courses.

Is the program available to students outside Hawaii?

Yes, our program is hybrid (online & Face-to-Face) so we welcome students from diverse geographic locations. Candidates residing outside of Oahu, please inquire about travel stipends and accommodations for professional development days.

How can I get Financial Aid?
