Department Core: (18 credit minimum; 6 courses)
All LTEC MEd students must complete the core courses in sequence. The Department Core consists of the following:
Fall semester core courses – First Semester, Year 1
- LTEC 600: Theory and Practice in Educational Technology
- LTEC 602: Innovations in Educational Technology
Spring semester core courses – Second Semester, Year 1
- LTEC 611: Ed Tech Research & Evaluation
- LTEC 613: Instructional Design and Development
Final core courses – Final Semester
- LTEC 687: Learning Design Studio
- LTEC 690: Seminar in Technology Leadership
The initial four core courses are taken with a student’s cohort in the first year of the program.
Elective Emphasis Courses (15 credits; 5 courses)
Elective courses are generally selected from 400-level and 600-level courses within the LTEC department. Electives provide all students with a solid foundation in educational technology theory and practice while advancing their knowledge in an area of emphasis unique to each student. With advisor approval, a limited number of courses may be taken in another discipline outside of LTEC if these would contribute to the area of emphasis. For a complete list of courses and descriptions, see the UHM course catalog.
Many students choose to take extra electives, either to support their research interests or to earn a Graduate Certificate such as the Graduate Certificate in Online Learning & Teaching (COLT). The certificate is 15 credits, so it can be completed through the five required MEd electives. Students interested in pursuing a Graduate Certificate must consult the Graduate Certificate program coordinator, Dr. Michael Menchaca (mikepm@hawaii.edu), during their first semester in the MEd program to qualify for the concurrent degree option.
