Makaiau

COE Associate Specialist Amber Strong Makaiau continues to enhance how Hawaiian history and culture is taught in Hawai‘i’s public schools through a National Endowment for the Humanities funded grant program. Since 2017, Makaiau has been working with the Mānoa Heritage Center and the Hawai‛i Department of Education to support educators by creating professional development workshops focusing on culturally responsive Hawaiian history unit plans.

Recently Olonā Media produced a video about the project. “I think it does a fantastic job highlighting one of the unique ways in which the UHM COE collaborates with both the HIDOE and other community organizations to support our educators in the state,” Makaiau said.
