International Comparisons of STEM and Peace Education, from the Perspective of Utilizing Digital Instructional Material

Hosted by Dr. Michael Menchaca and Dr. Ariana Eichelberger at Learning Design and Technology from August 1, 2024 to February 28, 2025

Self-introduction:

Dr. Hiroyuki Aoki has experience as both a schoolteacher and a digital content developer. Drawing from these roles and his studies in computer science education, his current research focuses on media-enhanced instructional materials and teaching programming as an “educational medium” for different age levels.

While the use of advanced VR technology in education is gaining attention, a gap remains between virtual experiences and education that emphasizes real-world, hands-on learning for children. Hawai‘i, with its abundant natural environment and historical significance as a site commemorating the U.S.-Japan war, offers unique educational opportunities. Dr. Aoki is particularly interested in how such uniquely Hawaiian educational experiences can be incorporated via technology into distance learning. Additionally, he hopes to explore the educational landscape in the U.S.—a leader in STEM education—and gain insights to enhance STEM education through comparisons with Asian countries.
