Murata completed his PhD at OSU in 1995 with emphasis in Adapted Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy.

Murata was nominated by Dr. John Solomon who is an adapted physical education specialist with the Licking Regional Educational Service Center in Newark, Ohio.

“Dr. Murata is an inspiring colleague and friend, whose dedication and passion make him stand out,” Solomon said. “As a colleague, he consistently brings positivity and an exceptional work ethic, balancing professionalism with genuine care for those around him. As his friend, I admire his humility, compassion, and unwavering support, which he offers without hesitation.”

Appointed as COE Dean in 2018, Murata began his career at UH Mānoa in the Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science (KRS) where he became a professor and served as department chair for nearly a decade. He continues to conduct research with his KRS team in both adapted physical activity and neurotrauma head injuries specific to concussions, along with securing private and federal funding.

“His innovative ideas and collaborative approach elevate every project he undertakes, and his commitment to excellence motivates others to push beyond their limits,” Solomon said. “His enthusiasm for education and dedication to advancing the field make him not only a valued colleague, but also a truly remarkable individual deserving of recognition for his lifetime achievement as an outstanding leader in education.”
